At this point in time, the British government really has very little influence over what goes on in the country in a significant sense. In fact, I would question whether it's even reasonable to describe Britain as a country, given that the primary defining characteristic of a country should be that it is sovereign. I suppose another possible definition would be simply a landmass with borders, but if this is what a country is then one would have to wonder where national pride, jingoism, flag waving, et al come into the equation when nationality is such an insignificant concept.
The culture of the UK was pretty much decided before many of us were born, and certainly before any of us were aware of it (some of us still aren't!). Certainly by the time I was born, with the acceptance of Britain into the Common Market, the final piece in the federal Europe was already complete. There are many other facets to this other than the Eurozone itself, although its greatest proponents and propagandists celebrated its sixtieth anniversary recently.
Here you open with the usual reactionary attitude towards Europe and the Eurozone, some would say Britain's refusal to adopt the common currency, involvement in global wars and Neo-Liberal Anglo-American economic policy for the last few decades have hampered and delayed the progress of the EU project hugely, exposing member states to deleterious financial and social effects.
It should be difficult to describe Britain as a country, it's not really, it's a Union of countries, often times throughout history fighting running wars against each other, the Welsh fought the Saxons on and off for around 400 years, brief periods of respite were given when the Vikings invaded taking ownership of most of the East coast, the Scots fought the English numerous times, Robert the Bruce to Bonnie Prince Charlie, a few hundred years at least of Hostilities.
The reason I think that's relevant is that it's part of an evolutionary trend towards unity that I perceive in history, politics, social relations, religion etc, to cooperate, work together and reach relative peace and accordance between national, regional, cultural, private interests.
British sovereignty isn't worth the hemp it's written on, people like Chris Grayling and David Cameron, Nigel Farage etc argue for British Sovereignty, British Neo-Cons who want Britain to have the sovereignty to deny Human Rights and so on.
What we are seeing now is simply the outcome of this. It will be exceptionally difficult to change things in any significant way because there is a cabal of banking, military and industrial interests that has acquired a level of power that goes well beyond the level of any individual country, astronomically beyond that level in fact. And they own everyone's arse that has ever or will ever access this forum, whether they are aware of it or not. And all these people are interested in is more for themselves, less for everyone else, as George Carlin put it.
So now you move from the EU, European Social Democrats, onto the Anglo American right wing I was speaking about before, the Conservative/Neo-con Establishment, these are the Pilgrim Society members, Knights of the High Orders of Chivalry etc, they are more influential than any country I agree, but they are actually resoundingly Anglo/American "Rich White Guys", they are represented in Governments that are members of the EU, they influence the EU and various members by use of various meetings, like the Bilderberg and more clandestine one's, by running think tanks, foreign policy consulting firms (containing ex and current intelligence and security staff) and by writing white papers, magazines, periodicals, newspapers like Brian Crozier, various Monday Club affiliated Tories, and Murdoch have been doing for decades.

They are politically active, so why you think it is beneath you I don't really get
Claims that people should leave and go to another country if they don't like this prevailing culture are utterly asinine, as it is a global culture which already controls the socio-economic structure of virtually every country on the earth, and is seeking to take over those that it doesn't already control. The consequences of this have been seen all over the world for decades while European, British and American people convinced themselves that the reason that it hasn't happened here, and the reason that they had a better standard of living, was due to some incredible, intrinsic values of our culture and society. In fact, it was necessary for us to work for this structure in order for it to be built.
Well this is the nature of an Anglo American global Empire, Anglo-Americans get the best of it, that's what the 20th century was about, there were about 5 or 6 Empires in Europe at the start of that century, by the end of it there was Britain and the USA enforcing neoliberalization and Free Trade, developing NATO, backing puppet regimes across most of the world, obstructing the progress of the UN and progressive politics at home
Increasingly that's not necessary any more; there are cheaper, harder working, and, in many cases, smarter and more qualified people in India, China, et al. Also, the banking sector is running out of ways to make money by piling debt on top of debt, so the rug is being pulled from under our collective feet. This could be done very quickly indeed, in a day, as occurred on Black Wednesday in September, 1992. It's actually far easier to do it now due to the relaxation of regulations, the fraud that takes place as a matter of course, the vulnerability of all Western economies, the level of interdependence that has now been cemented, and the vast amount of computerised, 'algorithmic' trading that takes place.
There's some anti EU EU Political group with the Leader of Hungary and Farage etc in it, called the People's Party or something, this will be the type of faction that will be working to implement, "Capitalism with Asian Values", Authoritarian forms of Capitalism, the Tory Cuts are this way inclined, the Workfare program also, it's referred to as a race to the bottom I think, in order to compete with China.
Incidentally if there was greater participation in the EU project, EU wide Minimum Wage laws and unrestricted free movement of people we'd be far less reliant on Chinese Imports and far less affected by economic migrancy from undeveloped economies in Europe.
It's a hard thing to accept, but the reason there isn't any significant social change, or at least none that seriously impedes the status quo, is that people don't want change. Until stuff happens that they don't like. Then they want the government to sort it out for them. Meanwhile we slide further and further into a total bankster lead takeover of society every day. Even if nothing at all happens this occurs, because the levels of debt become more and more unserviceable every day. Most people don't care until it affects them. That's the reality of the situation.
There is always significant social change taking place, it's kinda like this with financial interests on the Right:

balancing on the head of the masses of "represented voters", unfortunately we live in a post industrial world, (huge social change in the 70's 80's 90's etc) and financial interests govern all sides, but also the masses themselves, they act and think in line with what it takes to get a bit of currency in their pocket.
That to me is the "Ordo Ab Chao" thing, the warring private interests of the master and the slave are mediated by the Bourgeois State, it's development has been guided by Montesquieu, Mills, Locke, Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights etc but further the English Common Law and much Saxon Law anterior to that, it's about mediating the financial transactions of competing private interests, it's the paradigm since around the 18th Century, and everything you see takes place within it.
