The only way we will ever have a reality without 'work' is if the universe suffers heat death and all the possible energy 'exchanges' are done.
But tiz ok
The universe isn't an isolated system so the second law doesn't apply. Any where. Any when.
So we'd best get used to work. Literally everything, is work.
However.
We could easily live in a reality free of debt currency, insane consumerism. planned obsolescence, wealth inequality, industrial pollution and servitude. If we as a species wanted to, it could happen today. Millions of jobs would disappear overnight. Advertising and finance being just two sectors that would go, puff.
The arguments against that potential state usually involve folk saying stuff like, who'd go down the sewers if they weren't getting any remuneration?
Well. I for one would, right here and right now.
You have to bear in mind though that such a civilization would completely change the way we educate/inform each other. Such a society wouldn't be fostering silly ideas like competition, survival of the fittest, keep up with the Jone's etc etc. Such a society would raise it's yoot in a very different paradigm. That paradigm would quite likely not involve sewers. It wouldn't be wasteful and would be as low impact as possible. All those advertising execs could spend their time doing summat like, um, working on ingenious ways to harness the energy of human waste? Artificial constraints, imposed by financial limitations, would be gone. New technologies would appear daily. Who knows, we may even get to the stage of extracting energy from the vacuum itself? We therefore may be able to crack warp technology?
One thing is certain though. If we carry on at this rate, the human race is guaranteed to never even leave the Solar System.
